1959 is when
the Gods and Goddesses of Africa were reclaimed
by and for Africans in America. Before that time,
to speak of Gods and Africa in the same breath
was seen as blasphemy, hearsay or at least insanity.
Until then, it had not been fully conceived or
perceived that we: Africans in American or elsewhere
were reflections of the divine energy which permeates
the universe. After the deities return we could
envision the heavens filled African Goddesses
and Gods and simultaneously see ourselves in the
images of these divine entities. At last, the
beginning of spiritual freedom. No longer are
we dependent on the God of Palestine or Arabia
for our salvation. Our Path to the heavens will
be illuminated by Cultural Restoration! |
In 1859, Martin Delaney formed
the Niger Valley Exploring Committee. He traveled
to West Africa seeking immigration of Africans
in America to the motherland. In 1959, Oseijeman
Adefunmi traveled to Matanzas, Cuba and became
the first African in America to be fully initiated
into the Orisa African priesthood. The Gods
and Goddesses of Africa were finally given a
place of respectful veneration and worship.
During the 43 years since the unheralded return
of the pantheon of our indigenous spiritual
traditions; Oba Adefunmi has pioneered in many
areas of spiritual devotion and practice; psychological
redefinition, political reorganization and social
structure and behavior. Spiritual devotion and
practice was changed forever, with the pronouncements
of an African heaven. We are the progenitors
of humankind, caretakers of the world's first
civilizations and we were and are the chosen
people. Chosen initially to give civilization
to the world, and chosen now to guide humanity
away from its course of self destruction.
