Spirituality
The African Theological Archministry (ATA) was born in New York city in 1960's as the Black Nationalist Movement searched to restore more African culture than the religious overtones of the Civil Rights Movement. For many that chose to put physical action up under the choice of being "Black and Proud", the route of segregation to integration was not exactly what they were looking for.
Reclaiming the Ancestral customs and traditions into the everyday lives of the children of Oduduwa was the vision that brought Oba Oseijeman Adefunmi I, his household and followers from the urban temples in N.Y., Chicago and Indiana to the swamps of the South Carolina Low country to carve out and build the Kingdom of Oyotunji. Nearly four decades later, North America's oldest, authentic African village still stands.
The ATA (a non profit corporation) administrates the activities and operations of The Igbinmolosha Priest College, the Yoruba Royal Academy and Great Benin Films and Books. In 2010, the 40 year old Priesthood born of the House of Adefunmi Rites will be celebrating the continuance of the African Cultural Restoration Movement that was born in the 1960s. Some have already begun mapping out strategy for taking that vision to the next level of nation building! In this age of information and high gas prices, the ATA has amassed alliances worldwide via the Internet.
In the approach to the study of African Spirituality, which our elders tell us is a lifetime study…the tool of cyberspace brings us to the Continuing Education Department of Igbinmolosha Priest College, and the Advanced Studies Department.
The ATA will be launching our annual membership drive as of the upcoming Festival of Kings. The annual dues are only $10 a month plus a one time $20 registration fee. Those that are re-activating memberships or become new members before the clock strikes 12 on the year 2008 will receive 50% off any video purchase from Great Benin Films. Many of the Kingdom Investors come to this Odun Oba to discuss plans for making the celebration of Oba Adefunmi I's 50 th anniversary of initiation next year a reality in every town that extends the invitation. As well, Colleges and Universities, African Studies Departments, public and private schools that no longer have budgets for field trips may sponsor the Cultural Restoration Vision Tour…for fun and excitement for all who attend!
Study and experience the ancient African healing practices of Ancestral veneration, Orisha practices, history and knowledge first hand. Male and female rites of passage as well as Komojade for newborns, the union between clans/marriage rites…and of course the sacred traditions by which we bury our Dead. Learn how to re-institute the values and standards necessary to the preservation of our families and communities. The ATA is now structuring the Department of Elegbara communications to expand basic sociological, spiritual and sustainable living practices for those that are now wiser and will rewrite the reality in which we live.
